i was at rehearsal today and i was talking to these girls and the conversation got around to “who would you go gay for?” and one girl listed like ten women i was like… honey
I hate it when people are so against teaching young white kids to recognize their racism. Like people will literally say shit like “oh they’re too young to be taught about racism, that’s harmful!” but like children of color are never too young to face racism from white people who were never taught to recognize their racism as children. Start teaching white kids (boys AND girls) to recognize their racism; the problem starts when they’re young.
The way that we learn about Helen Keller in school is an absolute outrage. We read “The Miracle Worker”- the miracle worker referring to her teacher; she’s not even the title character in her own story. The narrative about disabled people that we are comfortable with follows this format- “overcoming” disability. Disabled people as children.
Helen Keller as an adult, though? She was a radical socialist, a fierce disability advocate, and a suffragette. There’s no reason she should not be considered a feminist icon, by the way, and the fact that she isn’t is pure ableism- while other white feminists of that time were blatant racists, she was speaking out against Woodrew Wilson because of his vehement racism. She supported woman’s suffrage and birth control. She was an anti-war speaker. She was an initial donor to the NAACP. She spoke out about the causes of blindness- often disease caused by poverty and poor working conditions. She was so brave and outspoken that the FBI had a file on her because of all the trouble she caused.
Yet when we talk about her, it’s either the boring, inspiration porn story of her as a child and her heroic teacher, or as the punchline of ableist, misogynistic jokes. It’s not just offensive, it’s downright disgusting.
if anyone would like to learn a couple tricks for carving pumpkins:
- dont cut out the top to scoop out the seeds, cut out the bottom instead. this way the pumpkin doesnt cave in on itself and lasts longer
- sprinkle some cinnamon inside at the top after carving. this way when you put the candle in it smells like pumpkin pie
this is the quality content I wanna see on my dash
- rub the i sides with lemon after you’re done scooping. This will also help preserve the pumpkin
It’s fucking June, at least wait until the fourth of July, you animal.
I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over the sound of me disemboweling this pumpkin.
Pls stop making lgbt people feel bad for falling into lgbt stereotypes. Like we didn’t ask for stereotypes. We didn’t ask for you to fetishize us. We’re just trying to be ourselves, we shouldn’t be shamed for “perpetuating stereotypes”. Let us exist in peace.
a lot of “stereotypes” are also a part of our culture and a part of how we recognize one another and a result of our experiences, but cis straight people love to shame us for this. fitting stereotypes can be good and embraced!!
Stereotypes reduce people to one dimensional caricatures. when we like things we’re stereotyped for that’s not the same thing as that stereotype, that’s just .. being a person imo
